Doula services across the Westside LA

The Westside stretches from Santa Monica to Venice to the Palisades to Beverly Hills, and it's one of my most active service areas. Four strong hospital options, a well-resourced community, and families who come prepared. Let's get you set up.

About the area

Why Westside LA families work with Denise

The Westside is a varied corridor, and the hospital landscape reflects that. Here's what I see most often:

  • UCLA Santa Monica's BirthPlace: around 1,500 births per year, a 16-bed Level III NICU, and a genuine CNM presence. This is a busy but well-staffed unit that skews toward lower-intervention births among Westside facilities.
  • Providence Saint John's: also on the Westside, with an 18-bed Level III NICU (the Irene Dunne Guild NICU) and the only hospital in this area currently offering nitrous oxide as a labor comfort option. Popular with families who want a community-hospital feel with solid NICU backup.
  • Cedars-Sinai: technically straddling the Westside/central-LA border, but the primary referral destination for Beverly Hills and West Hollywood families. Level IV Maternal Care (first in California), 45-bed Level IV NICU, CNMs with delivering privileges.
  • Kaiser West LA: for Kaiser members in the Westside corridor. L&D is on the 4th floor of the West Tower and offers midwifery care alongside OB care. Solid integrated care for members in the Kaiser network.

Westside families tend to have researched their options and arrive with specific questions. I find the conversations here go deep, fast. What does a low-intervention birth actually look like at this hospital? What happens if I want to labor in the tub? What do CNMs actually do in the room compared to an OB?

I can answer all of that from direct experience — not from reading the hospital's website.

From Torrance, most Westside destinations are 25-60 minutes away from my home. Traffic is a real variable and always part of our planning conversation.

Postpartum support across the Westside (Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, West Hollywood) is all in my service area.

Frequently asked

About supporting Westside LA births

What's the difference between UCLA Santa Monica and Providence Saint John's for labor support?

Both are strong options with Level III NICUs. UCLA Santa Monica has a higher birth volume and a well-established CNM practice, which tends to correlate with a lower-intervention culture. Saint John's is the only Westside hospital with nitrous oxide currently available, and some clients specifically choose it for that. I've supported births at both. Your OB's privileges will often make the decision, but if you have flexibility, those are the distinguishing factors.

How quickly can you get to the Westside from Torrance in labor?

Santa Monica is typically 35 minutes. Beverly Hills/Cedars is closer to 40-45 minutes, depending on where exactly I'm going and the time of day. Daytime Westside traffic is notoriously variable. For labor calls, I leave immediately and keep you updated. We build a timing plan together — no surprises, no guessing at 4 AM.

Do you support Kaiser West LA births?

Yes. Kaiser West LA is fully in my service area. Kaiser members on the Westside often ask whether a doula is "allowed" at a Kaiser birth — the answer is yes. I'm your independent support person, not a hospital employee. Kaiser L&D is on the 4th floor of the West Tower, and I'm familiar with the unit.

I'm in Venice / Marina del Rey — is that the Westside for doula purposes?

Yes, Venice and Marina del Rey are part of my Westside service area. The nearest hospitals are UCLA Santa Monica and Providence Saint John's. Postpartum visits in Venice and the Marina are no problem — I come to you, same as anywhere else in my service area.
