What Happens at a Support Group?

Feeding a new baby comes with a lot of questions, and most of them show up at 3 AM when there’s nobody around to ask. This group is where you bring them. Every Tuesday, I sit down with a small group of parents at New Beginnings at the Nest in Hermosa Beach, and we work through whatever is on your mind: the latch that isn’t clicking, the supply worry you can’t shake, the bottle your baby keeps refusing.

Who’s it for? More parents than you might think:

  • Breastfeeding moms: whether things are going smoothly and you want to keep it that way, or nothing feels right yet.
  • Pumping parents: occasional pumpers and exclusive pumpers alike.
  • Formula-feeding families: supplementation and bottle questions are welcome here, too.
  • Expectant moms: one session per cycle is dedicated to pregnant moms preparing to breastfeed.

And yes, bring your baby! Babies of any age are welcome (feeding and snuggling during group is encouraged).

What Can We Talk About?

Breastfeeding pain: If feeding hurts, something is off. We’ll look at what’s going on and how to make it comfortable again.

Latch and positioning: Finding a latch and a position that work for you and your baby (not the one a diagram says is “correct”).

Milk supply concerns: Worried you’re making too little, or too much? Let’s talk it through.

Weighted feeds: Weighing your baby before and after a feed shows exactly how much milk they took in. A great way to quiet the “is my baby getting enough?” worry.

Bottle introduction timing: Wondering when to offer that first bottle to your breastfed baby? We’ll talk timing.

Returning to work: Planning your pumping and feeding routine before you head back, so the transition feels manageable.

Pumping guidance: Practical help with your pumping questions, whether you pump occasionally or exclusively.

Supplementation questions: If supplementing is on your mind, bring your questions. No judgment here.

Weaning: When you’re ready to wind down your feeding journey, we’ll talk about doing it comfortably.

The Details

Where:

New Beginnings at the Nest
730 11th Street, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

Group size:

Capped at 5 participants for individualized attention

Cost:

FREE
(Registration required on the New Beginnings at the Nest website)

Why so small? Because a group of 5 means you leave with your questions answered, not with a lecture. There’s time for individualized attention at every session. And if you’re still pregnant, keep an eye out: one session per cycle is dedicated to pregnant moms preparing to breastfeed.

One honest note about scope: this is a support group, not a medical visit. If you or your baby has a fever, there’s an infection of the nipple or breast, or your baby is failing to thrive, those concerns need clinical care, and we’ll refer you to an IBCLC (an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).

CAPPA Certified Doula

Hi, I’m Denise Curtis. I’m a CAPPA Certified Labor & Postpartum Doula and lactation educator with years of experience helping moms like you.

I’ve heard it all so many times:

“I want to breastfeed but I’m afraid it’s going to hurt.”

“How do I know if I’m producing enough and what do I do if I’m not?”

“My baby spits up so much after every bottle feeding, what am I doing wrong?”

Questions like these deserve more than a rushed answer. That’s why this group stays small: 5 participants, so you can ask what’s actually on your mind and leave with answers you can use at your very next feed.

Come sit with a few other parents who are figuring this out, too. Bring your baby, bring your questions, and let’s work through them together. (You got this. Truly.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the group really free?

It really is. The group is complimentary (my favorite price, too). You do need to register ahead of time, since each group is capped at 5 participants. Reserve your spot on the New Beginnings at the Nest website and you’re all set.

Do I need to register ahead of time?

Yes, registration is required. Groups are kept to 5 participants so everyone gets individualized attention, which means spots can fill up. Booking happens on the New Beginnings at the Nest website, not on this site.

Can I bring my baby?

Absolutely. Babies of any age are welcome. Feed, snuggle, and soothe as needed while we talk.

What if I’m still pregnant?

You’re welcome here, too. One session per cycle is dedicated to pregnant moms preparing to breastfeed, so you can get your questions answered before your little one arrives.

What if I’m pumping or formula feeding?

The group is for you, too. Pumping parents and formula-feeding families are welcome, and pumping guidance, bottle introduction timing, and supplementation questions are all regular topics.

What about medical concerns?

Some things are outside the scope of a support group. If you or your baby has a fever, there’s an infection of the nipple or breast, or your baby has been diagnosed as failure to thrive, we’ll refer you to an IBCLC (an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) for one-on-one clinical care.

Can’t Make a Tuesday?

Totally fair. An afternoon slot doesn’t work for everyone, and feeding support shouldn’t have to wait for a Tuesday. Here are a few other ways I can help:

  • Start with my free guide: Feeding Fundamentals covers latch and pumping basics you can read tonight.
  • Learn on your own schedule: my Baby Feeding Master Class is a go-at-your-own-pace online course covering breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping, and breast care.
  • Get support at home: as a postpartum Doula, I support families right in their own homes during the fourth trimester.
